Reliable internet has become as essential as running water in today’s world. Whether you’re checking into a hotel, catching a flight, or attending a conference, slow Wi-Fi can ruin the experience. Ookla, best known for its Speedtest app, wants to solve that frustration with a new program called Speedtest Certified.
The certification is meant to give property owners a way to prove their connectivity is up to standard. The process involves a thorough assessment of a venue’s enterprise network, measuring Wi-Fi signal quality, network configuration, security, ISP backhaul, and performance metrics. Properties that meet the requirements earn a seal of approval backed by the Speedtest brand.
Stephen Bye, president and CEO of Ookla, explained the motivation behind it. “We’ve all felt the frustration of arriving at a hotel, conference, airport, or sporting event – only to discover that the internet connection is painfully slow,” he said. “Today, Ookla is introducing a solution. For years, you’ve trusted Speedtest for your own connectivity. Now, with Speedtest Certified, we’re extending that trust to the places you visit. Our rigorous testing takes the gamble out of finding a reliable network, giving you a seal of approval you can count on.”
Certified properties also gain access to the Speedtest Certified Digital Platform. This system provides personalized insights, benchmarking against other certified networks, and targeted recommendations for improvements.
Hamdy Farid, senior vice president of product at Ookla, said, “Speedtest Certified is the gold standard in network verification. It provides network owners, commercial real estate developers, and managed service providers with the objective metrics needed to validate network investments and stand out in a crowded market. And for the rest of us, it simply eliminates the guesswork, making it easy to find locations with an exceptional and consistent connected experience.”
The badge could eventually become as recognizable as a star rating or a cleanliness score. For travelers, tenants, and employees, that means fewer surprises when they open a laptop or phone in a supposedly modern venue.
