GhostBSD 25.02-R14.3p2 is now available, delivering a ton of updates, bug fixes, and hardware enhancements. Built on FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE, this release inherits kernel improvements, wireless networking updates, and security patches, making it a solid upgrade for users who want reliability.
The highlight of this version, however, is the introduction of Gershwin, a brand-new community desktop environment designed to resemble Apple’s macOS. Gershwin is built on GNUstep and offers an OS X-style interface while still supporting non-GNUstep applications. GhostBSD has already adapted its installer, Software Station, Backup Station, and Update Station to work seamlessly within Gershwin.
Although still an early preview, the project is shaping up to be one of the more unique desktop experiences in the BSD world. Development progress can be tracked on the Gershwin Desktop GitHub page.
System-level changes include automatic clearing of the /tmp directory, removal of certain ZFS tuning parameters, and automatic sound switching for audio devices with more than two channels. Boot environment management has been refined, Software Station now displays package conflict removals, and fusefs support has been restored. International users benefit from improved translations, with Simplified Chinese newly added and updates to Russian and Brazilian Portuguese.
Hardware detection has also been improved. This release adds support for AMD Radeon HD 8790M and Radeon HD 8240 Kabini GPUs, enhances compatibility with NVIDIA RTX 4000 and 5000 series, and integrates updated Wi-Fi firmware from FreeBSD 14.3. These changes expand GhostBSD’s reach across newer laptops and desktops.
Several bugs have been addressed, including shutdown issues, display errors in the Evolution email client, and problems with Plank dock integration in MATE. Popular packages such as Signal Desktop, Visual Studio Code, and 0 A.D. have been restored to the repositories. Compatibility with XPM image files has also been fixed.
On the security side, the developers resolved delays in package updates, ensuring faster delivery of critical fixes. Users who want a complete breakdown of changes can check the detailed changelog on the GhostBSD GitHub project page.
Downloads for GhostBSD 25.02-R14.3p2, including ISOs, checksums, and torrents, are available now from the official site. Existing users can upgrade, while new users can try out the Gershwin desktop environment for a first look at GhostBSD’s next big step on the desktop.
