Artificial intelligence is already showing up just about everywhere, but Samsung has found another place to put it: inside its semiconductor factories.
Samsung Electronics has announced a strategic partnership with Mistral AI that will bring the French AI company’s technology into Samsung’s semiconductor engineering and manufacturing operations. Rather than using AI primarily for consumer-facing features, Samsung plans to use it behind the scenes to help make chips.
The companies say Mistral AI’s models will be used for tasks including defect detection, equipment optimization, manufacturing precision, and stabilizing production yields. In other words, Samsung wants AI helping engineers identify problems, improve manufacturing equipment, and potentially squeeze more usable chips out of the manufacturing process.
Samsung plans to customize Mistral AI models, including Mistral Large, for its semiconductor operations. Importantly, the models will run on premises rather than sending sensitive semiconductor information outside Samsung’s infrastructure.
That makes plenty of sense. Chip manufacturing involves closely guarded designs, processes, and production data, so feeding that information into an externally hosted AI service could introduce obvious security and intellectual property concerns. Keeping the models within Samsung’s own environment gives the company more control over where that data goes.
The relationship between the two companies goes beyond Samsung simply becoming another Mistral AI customer. Samsung also participated in Mistral AI’s Series D funding round as a lead investor and acquired an equity stake in the company.
Samsung says the partnership will initially focus on semiconductor operations, but the two companies also plan to explore additional areas where Mistral AI technology could be used.
For Mistral AI, landing Samsung as both an investor and a customer is particularly interesting because it gives the company another opportunity to demonstrate that large language models can do more than power chatbots. Enterprise AI increasingly involves specialized models running against private corporate data, sometimes entirely within a company’s own infrastructure.
Samsung, meanwhile, gets another tool in its effort to improve an extraordinarily complicated manufacturing process. Even relatively small improvements in defect detection, equipment efficiency, or production yields can matter when a company is manufacturing semiconductors at enormous scale.
Of course, announcing that AI will improve chip manufacturing is easier than proving that it actually does. Samsung hasn’t provided much in the way of measurable results yet, so we’ll have to see whether Mistral AI produces meaningful manufacturing improvements or simply becomes another expensive tool in the semiconductor giant’s increasingly AI-heavy toolbox.
Either way, Mistral AI isn’t just coming to Samsung phones or PCs. It’s heading much deeper into the company, including the factories where Samsung’s chips are actually made.
