Total Wireless 5 year price guarantee is not what it seems

When a phone carrier tells you the price will stay the same for five years, that sounds like a pretty sweet deal. But with Total Wireless, it is not as good as it seems.

For instance, the company advertises a plan that is just $25 per month with Auto Pay. What it does not mention up front, however, is that the five-year price guarantee does not actually apply to that discounted rate. It only applies to the full price of the plan, which is $55 per month.

Yes, really. The price you are paying with Auto Pay is not the price they are locking in. Sadly, this will likely confuse and trick many consumers.

If Total Wireless decides to take away the Auto Pay discount in the future, your monthly bill could more than double overnight. And that would technically still be within the terms of the so-called guarantee. The company is only promising not to raise the base price, not the amount you are actually paying.

There is more. The guarantee goes away if your service is ever suspended, canceled, or moved to another plan. And it does not cover things like international features or bonus data. It also ignores any promotions or loyalty rewards.

Total Wireless is owned by Verizon. So the network is good. But the way the guarantee is worded feels like a trick. It makes you think your discounted rate is protected when it really is not.

If you are going to promote long-term savings, the numbers should be honest. A real price guarantee should cover what people are actually paying, not just the inflated full price that most customers never pay anyway.
