AV Comparatives just dropped its massive Consumer Summary Report for 2025, and it remains one of the few independent labs where users can trust the data. The Austria-based group spent the entire year testing nineteen Windows security products against real malware, fileless attacks, and everyday performance drag.
The headline winners are seven Top Rated products. That list includes Avast Free Antivirus, AVG AntiVirus Free, Bitdefender Total Security, ESET Home Security Essential, G Data Total Security, Kaspersky Premium, and Norton Antivirus Plus. If you’re surprised two freebies made the cut, you shouldn’t be. AV Comparatives scores are based purely on protection, not marketing.
Norton topped real-world protection, beating back live web threats that trip up careless downloaders. Bitdefender earned Silver there, while Avira, Kaspersky, and McAfee shared Bronze. In malware protection, it was Kaspersky in Gold, with G Data and Bitdefender following closely behind. Different tools shine in different tests, which is part of the message.
Performance results were a big win for anyone on a budget. Avast and AVG tied for Gold in low system impact, proving free antivirus no longer slows machines to a crawl. Norton secured Silver and McAfee earned Bronze. Meanwhile Bitdefender and ESET swept advanced threat protection, blocking every targeted attempt thrown at them.
False positives continue to separate polished products from jumpy ones. Kaspersky led with the fewest bad alerts all year, followed by Total Defense and Bitdefender. AV Comparatives also rated user interfaces, making note of clean designs, beginner-friendly controls, and power-user customizations without turning that into a popularity contest.
One thread running through the report is how awkward the antivirus business has become. Pricing varies wildly, first-year discounts often hide big renewal spikes, and many trials now demand email addresses or even credit cards. AV Comparatives warns users to watch for auto-renew traps and do the math before committing.
If you want maximum protection with minimal fuss, any of the Top Rated programs is a safe bet. Free users get strong options with Avast and AVG, while Bitdefender, ESET, and Norton deliver deep features for folks willing to pay. What matters most is picking one, installing it, and keeping it updated rather than assuming Windows Defender alone can handle everything.
